Please use this thread to introduce yourself to other forum users, if you wish. It's not compulsory to introduce yourself before you start posting, and you can put as much or as little information as you like.

Hopefully more people will join this site soon. I think it will be really handy to help with ideas for practicals, see what other tasks technicians are carrying out within their role, overcoming problems etc Shocked
I've been in this role for a year now and having come from industry I still find I have hundreds of questions and no one to ask.

Plea\se join up if you are just browsing through....I need to pick your brains!!! What a Face

Hi Rachel, great to hear from you. I think there are quite a few people who view the posts but are reluctant to post, for whatever reason. I agree this is a great facility and I hope it will become more widely used. Sometimes you do feel rather out on a limb as we don't have the networks that teachers seem to have. Please, feel free to ask anything at all, and I'll do my best. One thing I have come to learn about Science Technicians is that they are a very helpful and knowledgeable bunch who like to share their knowledge and maybe by asking your questions, you'll prompt people to respond who haven't posted before. Very Happy

Hello Rachel,
We have put a lot of effort into our page ranking to get seen in search engines.
We are building a list of nationwide schools which we will email to promote this resource,
Our aim is to build a nationwide network of technicians who can communicate through the forum and hold meetings, as many technicians feel isolated we want to help close the gap between technicians to help and support all science technicians at a national level. A network/organisation is only as strong as its members and I am really pleased to see the forum starting to be used as intended, and we value your posts. Please keep posting and tell fellow Science Technicians about us.

Hiya

I am a technician at an academy in Northamptonshire and have been a tech now for about 5 years. At my current school I am the full time science technician and I work with another part time science technician.

We are currently preparing to move to a new build in October which means during the course of packing we are discovering all kinds of equipment that no one knows we have and deciding on what it is, what it does and whether it can be used again Smile

All good fun Shocked

I am TecHKnow. Or rather my real name is Seamus Smith and I have been managing the UCLAN Scitech Forumswebsite since its beginnings in 2004. I also have built and developed the TecHKnow website which has been in existence since 2005.

Just dropped by to wish you the very best of luck with your new venture. I hope you evolve and develop into a fantastic and rich resource suitable for UK Science technicians. Technicians need all the support they can get. I will give you a mention across on my websites in the very near future.

Regards

Hi Salva,

Welcome to www.sciencetechnicians.org. As far as I am aware, to work as a Science Technician in a school I don’t think there are any minimum requirements, although in reality most people applying for a post will have experience of working in a laboratory environment. An interest in Science and qualifications in Science are always beneficial, and also problem-solving skills and evidence of being practical in a 'hands on' way. You'll find that we are a very varied bunch in terms of our backgrounds and qualifications.

Some schools might prefer candidates who possess the NVQ LATA (Laboratory and associated technical activities), but in some areas of the country it may be difficult to find a provider.

If any other members would like to add their twopenneth on this, please feel free.

Thank'you for this reply.
It is always the same problem, who was born first: the egg or the hen? ... the laboratory experience or the employment in a school lab? If you have one, you have the other; but if you do not have any you will not get any!

Ciao

Hi, any science qualification would be an advantage, but not always necessary unless you are looking for a senior or team leader position.
The job is often part time, pro rata and let’s face it the pay isn’t great, so there are not floods of applicants.
A good way to get experience would be to volunteer at a school near you for a short while.
That would give you an insight to what the job involves, and would be good on a CV.
Down side to that is you may have to pay for your CRB security check, unless you offer the school a specific length of time. Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm Fiona and I work at Rishworth school. I've been a school tech for almost 3 years. Before children I worked in a microbiology lab in Bradford and Leeds as a BMS1.

School lab work fits better with family life than shift and on call patterns of the NHS

Hiya - Leigh here (male despite the spelling), sole Science Technician at the Ormiston Horizon Academy in the North of Stoke on Trent.

Just taken the role - though tech'ed at Keele Uni until 2003 and worked in secondary education in various positions - and now finding my feet (aka pulling things from my memory).

Have quite a challenge ahead of me - will only be in our current building until Summer 2013 then into a totally new building - so once I know where everything is, things will be in totally new places with new labs, new stores, new prep room, etc Very Happy

Leigh.....

Hi I'm Joanne.

I'll be starting my new job as a science technician at a high school in St Helens in February.

I have been told that I will only receive two days training as the current technicians are retiring two days after I start.

I am a bit daunted by this as although I have degrees in Applied bioscience and Microbiology and am knowledgeable working in the lab and using chemical etc, I have no previous experience as a science technician.

There will be two of us, both new, who will have to learn the ropes really quickly.

Luckily I am a highly organised person and can think on my feet.

What are the essentials I need to know at the handover?

Can anyone please give a newbie some advice?

Off the top of my head I'd reccommend the following:

-Learn the layout of where everything is stored, even if it's just a rough plan with the like of 'physics stuff', 'circuit stuff', 'biological chemicals'... It'll save a lot of time running around looking.

-When I'm training new tehnicians I ask the teachers to be very specific in their orders. Insted of writing 'limestone cycle prac' I get them to list every piece of equipment they need so the technician has a exact idea of what's involved rather than having to look it up themselves (though there is a learning experiance there, if time permits).

-don't try and take shortcuts if you're short of time, such as using a stronger acid to produce Hydrogen Gas because it'll be quicker (I'm speaking from experiance). follow the safety advice and if it takes longer, explain to the teachers that they'll have to be paitent until you are more familiar with the activity.

-make sure you know where the Cleapps handbook is and how to use it. Same for the Hazcards and Recepie cards. If you don't know what somthing is or how something works there's probably a guide to it on Cleapps.

-Make sure you know what's expected of you. Are you expected to photocopy? trail practicals? order and maintain stocks? Are you expected to take break or lunch duties (this shouldn't be part of your job description and if you choose to do it you can expect to get paid to do so)? It may sound a bit pissy but that kind of thing can have a massive impact on your time.

-Remember that you are not legally responsible for risk assessing the practical lesson in the classroom or what happens in the classroom, the teacher is. Assuming everything you have prepared is safe and correct (and you've provided that information for the teacher) you cannot be held responsible for accidents or injury in the classroom.

Despite all that though, the job is incredably varied and sometimes doing something that's not expected of you (school trips, demo's in classrooms, extra-curricular activities) is great.

Hope this helps.

Dan

Hi Jo, Hi Barkie Very Happy

Dan, that's really good advice you gave. I would also recommend to anyone entering a new school, to get a copy of the staff handbook for the school and your subject and really try and get to get grips with existing routines.

How are you doing, Jo? Are you finding your feet? Don't forget there are loads of people on here who are happy to help with any questions you might have.

Good luck! sunny
